Current Obsession – Jade Rollers

Being a self-confessed skincare junkie means that I’m constantly trying out new products and techniques to add to my routine.

I recently discovered a new found love for Hydra-facials. My skin has been on the dry to abnormally parched side this summer. I tend to get a little oily during this time of the year, but my skin has been craving a bit of moisture.

As a finishing step to my facial, the technician pulled out a green, double-ended crystal wand which she promised would de-puff and soothe my skin. Never had I seen a jade roller before, which is quite unusual considering I keep up with most skincare trends.

Needless to say I was hooked. She rolled and sculpted my face, hugging on the contours of my cheekbones. The cool and comforting sensation made the whole facial that much more luxe. From that moment on, I sought out my own Jade roller to use during my skincare routine and I’ve never looked back.

What are Jade rollers?

Jade rollers have been a staple in the Asian beauty market for centuries. Shaped almost like a mini paint roller, these double or single ended wands contain solid oval Jade crystals. These crystals contain huge healing properties which we will delve into in just a moment. My favourite aspect of Jade rollers is that they are considered mini facials at your fingertips. They’re used as a finishing step of any skincare routine or facial.

What are the benefits of using them?

The most well-known benefits of using Jade rollers include reducing inflammation and puffiness of the skin, reducing the appearance of under eye circles (especially if your roller is cold), stimulating the lymphatic system, blood circulation, brightening complexion, tightening pores, helping reduce the appearance of fine lines, and allowing skincare products to penetrate more deeply.

Jade rollers are incredible at encouraging drainage and toning of facial muscles. Rolling along the form of your face, particularly beneath your jawbone can create enviable contour lines. The cool, super smooth surface allows you to pinpoint muscles and tissues with gentle pressure – much like a massage.

How do I use it?

Over the summer months, when the weather has been particularly scorching, I’ve kept my Jade roller in the fridge to elevate its natural cooling effect – for particular use under my eyes after a heavy night out!

Ordinarily, it’s had a permanent home on my dressing table which I tend to reach for morning and night, during my skincare routines.

Once I have cleansed and toned, I apply my nighttime facial oil or daytime moisturiser on random points of my face and neck. I then use my Jade roller to ‘spread’ the product all over. Not only does this help with circulation, but it also helps your oils or serums to reach a deeper level of your skin, allowing the product to really penetrate and do its job.

The trick to using any beauty tool, particularly Jade rollers, is to remember to roll up and away. Apply a light pressure, working around your facial contours. Work in upwards motion on your neck, forehead and mouth area. Divide your cheeks into two area – high cheekbones and just under the cheekbones. Roll both these areas separately in outward motions starting from your nose towards your ears. Finally – use half moon motions to work your eye cream or serum under your eyes.

Where can I get them from?

Jade rollers have become so widely popular that they are readily available in most beauty sections of mainstream stores. TK Maxx have a great range at the moment, where I got my husband one. I purchase mine from Amazon (prime junkie over here).

When purchasing your Jade roller, ensure that the stone is natural Jade and the handle is of a sturdy material.
